In her 85 page ghost story, Springtime, Australian fiction writer, Michelle de Kretser, dispenses with virtually all of the conventions of the genre, yet still manages to leave you unsettled in the way that most ghost stories do.  A couple marries in Melbourne and moves immediately to the more tropical Sydney, where Frances can’t manage to find comfort.  There’s the unexplained matter of her husbands mysterious past, and a series of apparitions which she can’t explain.  It is a ghost story of unbearable irony by one of Australia’s greatest writers.  She is also the author of The Hamilton Case.
