Sweeping Up Glass
Carolyn Wall

I sat down in my kitchen with this novel to occupy an hour or so -- soon the day was gone, and I was still reading.  Ms. Wall's debut novel has such an original voice, I was completely drawn into the small town of Depression-era Kentucky and the story of the protagonist, Olivia Harker Cross.  Olivia lives behind her small grocery store with her grandson Will'm and her cantankerous mother, Ida.  Life is tough, and gets a lot tougher when poachers begin killing wolves on the mountain behind Olivia's house.  Olivia is no pushover, and begins to fight back -- unaware that her small town holds many secrets.  This is a superb read, with the frosting on the cake being a wonderful mystery wrapped inside a darn good story.  Put it on your book club list.
